FITIV’s Perceived Effort (PE) feature provides an easy way to track how hard your workouts feel and monitor your overall training load. This guide will show you how to use PE to optimize your fitness routine and track
your progress over time.
What is Perceived Effort (PE)?
Perceived Effort (PE) is a scale that helps you assess the intensity of your workout based on how hard it feels, ranging from 1 (very light) to 10 (max effort). This scale makes it easy to evaluate how challenging a workout is based on your own experience, which helps you train smarter and prevent injury. Unlike objective metrics like heart rate or pace, PE takes into account your unique fitness level, fatigue, and daily condition.
Pro Tip: An estimated effort value is provided based on heart rate, which is typically more accurate for cardio workouts like running and cycling compared to strength or weight lifting sessions.
Why Should I Use Perceived Effort (PE)?
Incorporating PE into your fitness routine has multiple benefits:
- Avoid Overtraining: Adjusting your workout intensity using PE helps prevent overexertion, reducing the risk of injury and burnout.
- Track Progress: Monitoring how your effort changes over time allows you to see improvements in fitness.
- Personalized Feedback: Because PE is subjective, it adapts to your current fitness level, ensuring workouts are tailored to how you’re feeling that day.
Success Tip: Enable the Post-Workout Reminder toggle so we can remind you log your PE effortlessly after each workout.
Effort Minutes and Training Load (TL) with Perceived Effort
Effort Minutes are a powerful way to measure your overall workout intensity. These are calculated by multiplying your Perceived Effort by the workout duration, providing a more comprehensive view of how hard you've worked. This data feeds into your overall Training Load (TL), which tracks how much strain your workouts place on your body over time. Understanding your training load is crucial for managing progress, recovery, and long-term fitness goals.

How to Use Perceived Effort (PE) with FITIV
FITIV provides two ways to log Perceived Effort:
1. Automatic PE Estimation
FITIV automatically estimates your Perceived Effort based on your heart rate. This method works best for cardio workouts like running or cycling, where heart rate is a good indicator of effort.
Pro Tip: Heart rate-based PE estimates become more accurate as the app learns from your past workout data.
2. Manual PE Logging
You can also log your Perceived Effort manually after a workout. Here’s how:
- After completing a workout, you’ll see a Perceived Effort reminder if you have enabled the Post-Workout Reminder toggle.
- In the FITIV Pulse app, tap on your latest workout and select your Perceived Effort from the 1-10 scale.
Success Tip: If you forget to log your PE right after the workout, you can still update it later by editing your workout in the app.
Perceived Effort Scale Explained
Here's a breakdown of what each level on the Perceived Effort scale means:
- Very Light: Barely any effort, almost like resting
- Light: Slight effort, easy to manage
- Comfortable: Comfortable, steady effort that felt effortless
- Moderate: Noticeable effort, still manageable
- Challenging: Increased focus and energy required to maintain the effort
- Hard: Significant increase in effort, challenging physical capabilities
- Intense: High level of intensity, demanding substantial energy and concentration
- Very Intense: Nearing limit, requiring maximum focus and determination
- Near Maximal: Close to maximum effort, intensity nearly overwhelming
- Max Effort: Maximum effort exerted, pushing physical limits to the extreme
Pro Tip: Skipping Perceived Effort won’t count toward your Training Load (Effort Training Load Method).
Why Listening to Your Body Matters
Using Perceived Effort in the FITIV app helps you understand your workouts better, giving you more control over your fitness journey. Whether you prefer automatic estimates or manual logging, FITIV ensures that your workouts are tracked in a way that reflects your personal experience.
With Effort Minutes contributing to your Training Load, you can make data-driven decisions to optimize your fitness routine and avoid burnout.
