Cardio Fitness (VO2 Max) is a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during intense exercise. It is a powerful indicator of your cardiovascular fitness and endurance capacity.
A higher Cardio Fitness reflects a greater ability to perform sustained physical activity, while a lower Cardio Fitness may suggest the need for improved fitness or conditioning. By monitoring your Cardio Fitness trends, you can assess how your body is adapting to your training and adjust your workouts accordingly.
Your Apple Watch automatically records Cardio Fitness during Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Run, and Hiking workouts, and FITIV reads these values directly from Apple Health for post-workout reporting.
For other types of workouts, or if you’re using a heart rate monitor, FITIV estimates your Cardio Fitness based on your maximum heart rate during the session. This means higher-intensity workouts, like a hard run, will score higher compared to lower-intensity activities, such as walking. FITIV does not write Cardio Fitness data to Apple Health.
Ranges
- Elite: You have exceptional Cardio Fitness , often seen in top athletes. Your body efficiently uses oxygen during high-intensity workouts.
- Fit: Your Cardio Fitness is strong, and you have good endurance for sustained physical activity.
- Active: Your Cardio Fitness is average for someone who engages in regular physical activity, though further improvement can be achieved through more focused aerobic training.
- Poor: Your Cardio Fitness is below average, reflecting a need for more consistent aerobic exercise. This range is typically seen in those who are less active or just beginning a fitness routine.
Ranges are based on gender and age.
Please note: A true VO2 Max test requires a cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) — a procedure in which an individual is asked to ride a stationary bike or ambulate on a treadmill at increasing intensity levels while wearing a face mask. The Cardio Fitness you see in FITIV is merely an estimate of your fitness during a workout.

⚠️ Not seeing your Cardio Fitness after a workout? FITIV needs three things to calculate a reliable estimate:
If any of these conditions are not met, FITIV will display a message explaining why. To improve your chances, aim for a sustained effort of at least 10 minutes at moderate or higher intensity. |
