Heart Rate Recovery measures how quickly your heart rate drops after intense exercise. It reflects how well your body transitions from exertion to recovery, providing insights into your cardiovascular health and overall fitness.
A faster heart rate recovery indicates better cardiovascular fitness and recovery ability, while a slower recovery may suggest the need for further conditioning or rest. Monitoring your heart rate recovery trends can help you adjust your training intensity and improve your recovery over time.
FITIV calculates Heart Rate Recovery by scanning the entire workout session. For Apple Watch users, our app also considers the 3 minutes after the workout ends. This comprehensive approach allows us to capture the best 1-minute and 2-minute recovery values, which may occur at different points during the cooldown.
Ranges
- Elite: Your Heart Rate Recovery is excellent, often seen in well-conditioned athletes. Your heart rate drops rapidly after exertion, reflecting a highly efficient cardiovascular system and superior recovery ability.
- Fit: Your Heart Rate Recovery is strong, meaning your body is recovering well from intense exercise. You likely have good cardiovascular fitness and resilience during workouts.
- Active: Your Heart Rate Recovery is within the normal range for someone who exercises regularly. There is room for improvement through focused training, but your body manages recovery relatively well.
- Poor: Your Heart Rate Recovery is slower than average, indicating that your cardiovascular system takes longer to recover after intense activity. This suggests a need for more consistent aerobic exercise to improve your fitness and recovery efficiency.
Ranges are based on age.
- For Apple Watch Users: The Apple Watch automatically tracks Heart Rate Recovery, and FITIV pulls this data from Apple Health for your post-workout report, so you don’t need to keep the workout active.
- For BLE Users: If you're using a Bluetooth(BLE) heart rate monitor, heart rate recovery is calculated directly in the app. For better tracking, we recommend adding an extra 2 minutes of cooldown before ending your workout.

⚠️ Not seeing your Heart Rate Recovery after a workout? FITIV needs four things to calculate a reliable recovery value:
If any of these conditions are not met, FITIV will display a message explaining why. To get the best results, aim for at least 10 minutes of sustained effort at moderate-to-high intensity, and allow your heart rate monitor to continue recording for a few minutes after you finish. |
