Workout Auto-Pause detects when you stop moving during a workout and suspends tracking until you start again. When you resume, tracking picks back up on its own. This keeps traffic lights, water breaks, and rest stops out of your active time, so your pace and duration reflect the work you actually did.
Auto-Pause applies to Apple Watch workouts only. It does not apply to workouts tracked with a Bluetooth heart rate monitor or with your iPhone alone.
Which workouts does Auto-Pause apply to?
Auto-Pause works on running and cycling workouts tracked by your Apple Watch. These activities use motion and GPS data, which is what Auto-Pause needs to tell the difference between moving and standing still.
It does not apply to:
- Workouts tracked with a Bluetooth (BLE) heart rate monitor
- Workouts tracked with your iPhone only
- Indoor or non-GPS activities such as weight lifting, yoga, or HIIT
Why would I want to use Auto-Pause?
Auto-Pause keeps your workout data honest. Without it, every stop counts toward your total time, which drags down your average pace and inflates your duration.
This matters most if you train in places where stopping is unavoidable. City runs with crosswalks, rides with descents and junctions, and trail sessions with gates all produce cleaner numbers with Auto-Pause on.
It also means less to think about mid-session. You do not have to reach for your wrist every time you stop.
How do I turn Workout Auto-Pause on or off?
You can find the setting in your Workout Preferences.
- Open FITIV Pulse on your iPhone.
- Go to the More tab (•••)
- Tap Workout Preferences.
- Scroll down to Auto Pause and toggle it on or off.
The setting applies to future workouts. Changing it will not affect a session already in progress.
| ✅ Success Tip: With Auto-Pause on, your Apple Watch workout timer stops when you do and restarts when you move again. You should see the timer hold while you are standing still. |
How does Auto-Pause work with my Apple Watch's own setting?
Your Apple Watch has a native Auto-Pause setting of its own, separate from FITIV's. To check it:
- Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
- Scroll down and select Workouts.
- Find Auto-Pause and set the toggle.
Why is my workout pausing when I don't want it to?
Start by checking which device is tracking the session, because that determines whether Auto-Pause is even involved.
If your Apple Watch is tracking the workout:
- Turn off Auto-Pause in the More tab (•••) > Workout Preferences if you want the timer to run continuously.
- Check your Apple Watch's native Auto-Pause setting as well, using the steps above.
If a Bluetooth heart rate monitor or your iPhone is tracking the workout:
Auto-Pause is not active, so something else is interrupting the session. Confirm your sensor is paired inside FITIV Pulse rather than through your iPhone's Bluetooth settings, and check that the sensor battery is charged. | ⚠️ Alert tip: A heart rate monitor paired through your phone's Bluetooth settings instead of inside FITIV Pulse can drop its connection mid-workout. |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Does Auto-Pause work with a Bluetooth heart rate monitor?
A: No. Auto-Pause applies to Apple Watch workouts only. Workouts tracked with a BLE heart rate monitor or with your iPhone alone do not use it.
Q: Which activities support Auto-Pause?
A: Running and cycling workouts tracked by your Apple Watch. These activities provide the motion and GPS data Auto-Pause relies on.
Q: Will Auto-Pause affect my heart rate data?
A: Your heart rate readings are unaffected. Auto-Pause suspends the workout timer and distance tracking, then resumes both when you move again.
Q: Can I turn Auto-Pause on in the middle of a workout?
A: No. Changes take effect on your next workout. A session already in progress keeps the setting it started with.
Q: Why did my workout not pause when I stopped?
A: Auto-Pause needs a clear change in motion to trigger. Very short stops, indoor activities, and workouts without GPS may not register one. Confirm the toggle is on and that your Apple Watch is tracking the session.
